WHAT IS ULTRAMARINE BLUE?

Ultramarine Blue is a deep blue coloured pigment that can be used by itself in body care applications or to deepen the tone of other colours in various applications. This pigment is a colour of which the harmful impurities have already been filtered out. When incorporated into skincare products, it is described to have a sulfuric smell.

However, one of the powder’s drawbacks is that it tends to clump. You will need to be especially careful to de-clump the powder first before adding it to your recipe. To successfully de-clump beforehand, use a hand mixer to pre-mix your pigment in with a deodorised fixed oil, such as sweet almond oil or olive oil, before adding to your soap. This will help disperse and break up any clumps. The coloured oil can then be added to the soap batter at trace when making cold process soap. For melt and pour soap, the pigment should ideally be first mixed thoroughly with glycerine to get rid of speckling and can then simply be added to the melt and pour soap base.

USES OF ULTRAMARINE BLUE

This ultramarine colour gives a brilliant and bold blue colour once suspended in its wetting agent. It is resistant to high temperatures and is also known to be resistant to alkaline solutions.

This pigment can be used for tinting cosmetics such as foundations, blushes, eyeshadows and eye liners. It can also be used to colour soaps and bath bombs. It has been proven to be chemically stable in soaps and will not change shape or colour in cold processes or opaque melt and pour soaps. The usage rate of this blue pigment varies from a lighter to a darker tone depending on the desired hue. However, please note that oversaturation in soaps will create suds or may stain fabrics.

Warning: Do not store these colours near an acid component. There may be a violent or incandescent reaction of the product with metals, such as aluminium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, lithium, sodium, etc., at high temperatures. Also, use protective masks to avoid breathing in the dust.
