What is Rosemary Essential Oil?

Rosemary oil is an essential oil derived from the rosemary plant (Rosmarinus officinalis), a perennial herb in the mint family known for its fragrant, needle-like leaves and pale blue flowers. This oil is extracted primarily through steam distillation of the flowering tops, ensuring a high concentration of its active components. Characterised by a clear to pale yellow colour, rosemary oil possesses a distinctive, refreshing aroma reminiscent of the Mediterranean region where the plant is commonly found.

Renowned for its versatility, rosemary oil is frequently used in personal care products and hair care routines. It has a very pleasant scent, making it a popular choice for diffusing in work and study environments. In hair care, rosemary oil is often applied topically to the scalp and hair, where it is valued for contributing to healthy-looking hair. Its lightweight texture allows for easy absorption without leaving a greasy residue, catering to a range of hair types.

Benefits of Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil is an essential oil that is very versatile and can be used for a variety of different purposes. Some of these include:

Diffusing

Rosemary essential oil is perfect for diffusing, thanks to its pleasant, fragrant aroma. It is a great essential oil to diffuse in an office or commercial space, as it helps to keep high-traffic areas smelling fresh.

To use rosemary essential oil in your diffuser, place 8-10 drops in about 200 ml of water. Let the water and oil mix well, and turn your diffuser on. Enjoy the vibrant scent as you go about your work day! Or, you can even add rosemary oil to your diffuser when you come home and have a fresh aroma throughout your home.

Rosemary Oil for Skin and Beauty

Skincare

You can also enjoy rosemary oil as a beneficial addition to your skincare routine. This essential oil contains properties that help to reduce the visual redness caused by inflammation or acne.

Since rosemary oil is a concentrated essential oil, do not apply it straight onto your skin. Mix it in with a carrier oil that is suitable to apply on your face, such as jojoba oil, sweet almond oil or argan oil, and apply a small amount to your face either in the morning or evening.

Keep in mind that rosemary essential oil is for topical application only. Do not ingest it.

Haircare

Pure rosemary oil is a great addition to your hair care routine, making it a true beauty all-rounder. This essential oil helps give the appearance of thicker, fuller hair, as well as provide a nice shine. You can apply rosemary oil, mixed with a carrier oil, to the ends of your hair daily or as a hair mask before showering.

How to Use Rosemary Oil

There are lots of benefits to using rosemary essential oil for hair care and other skin routines. Here are some examples:

Rosemary Oil for Hair and Scalp

Rosemary oil is known for its ability to elevate your hair care routine. Regular application of a mixture of rosemary oil and carrier oil to the scalp can give you the appearance of fresh and nourished roots. Its use can leave hair looking shinier and more vibrant, making it a popular hair care gift and natural remedy.

Rosemary Oil for Hand Care

Rosemary oil can be an excellent addition to hand care routines, particularly for those who struggle with the appearance of dry and chapped skin.

Mixing a few drops of rosemary oil with a mild hand lotion or carrier oil and applying it to your hands and palms regularly can help improve the way your skin looks and provide an invigorating scent. Rosemary oil is a natural and effective way to keep hands soft.

Rosemary Oil for Foot Care

Incorporating rosemary oil into foot care can offer benefits such as deodorising properties, along with an addition to your skincare routine. For a foot bath, add a few drops of rosemary oil to warm water and soak your feet after a long day. Or you can add a few drops of rosemary oil to your foot scrub. Use this scrub on your feet and soak your feet in warm water for a few minutes. Afterwards, dry your feet and moisturise well.

What Can I Use Rosemary Oil For?

A versatile oil that has a broad range of uses, one bottle of rosemary essential oil makes a part of a great skin care gift set as well as a vital ingredient for many natural DIY products you can make in the comfort of your own home.

Rosemary Oil as Massage Oils

Rosemary oil is a popular choice for massage oils thanks to its ability to improve your skincare and hair care routines. As it is an essential oil, rosemary oil is potent. Before using it as a massage oil directly on your skin, make sure you blend it with a carrier oil. The invigorating aroma also aids in creating a refreshing atmosphere, enhancing the overall massage experience.

DIY Candle and Soap Making

In DIY candle and soap making, rosemary oil adds a natural, aromatic touch. For candles, mix rosemary oil with melted wax and a wick for a refreshing scent. In soap making, blend the oil into your soap base, enhancing the fragrance and offering a spa-like experience. Rosemary essential oil’s pleasant aroma makes these homemade products delightful for personal use or thoughtful, handcrafted gifts.

Which Essential Oils Can Be Blended With Rosemary Oil?

Cedarwood Essential Oil

Rosemary oil has a fresh and herbaceous aroma, whereas cedarwood essential oil typically has a warm, woody, and balsamic scent. When combined, the crispness of rosemary balances the depth and warmth of cedarwood, resulting in a blend that is very pleasant to inhale. This combination can be particularly appealing for use in diffusing, personal care products, and home fragrances.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus oil is known for its clear, sharp, and menthol-like scent. When combined with rosemary oil, it becomes a pleasantly complex yet balanced scent. It is quite fresh, making it perfect for a work or study space when mixed with water in a diffuser.

Geranium Essential Oil

Blending rosemary essential oil with geranium essential oil can create a delightful and harmonious aroma. Both oils have distinct yet complementary aromatic notes that can work well together. Geranium oil is known to blend well with a variety of essential oils, including the more herbaceous and woody scents like rosemary.

Who Should Not Use Rosemary Oil?

There are certain situations when rosemary essential oil shouldn’t be used without the approval of a medical professional. Here is our general guide to who should not use rosemary essential oil:

Is Rosemary Oil Safe for Use During Pregnancy?

The safety of rosemary oil during pregnancy is a topic of caution. Due to the lack of extensive research and its strong, potent nature, it is generally recommended to avoid rosemary essential oil or use it under professional medical guidance during pregnancy.

Is Rosemary Oil Safe for Children?

Essential oils like rosemary are highly concentrated and potent, which means they cannot be directly used on your skin. When using it for skincare or hair care routines, especially for children, make sure you dilute the rosemary oil with carrier oils like coconut oil. For any questions, please consult with a healthcare professional.

Around young children, be careful that they do not ingest rosemary essential oil. It is for topical use only.

How to Store Rosemary Oil

To ensure the longevity and efficacy of rosemary oil, it's important to store it properly. Keep the oil in a dark, glass bottle to protect it from light, which can degrade its quality. The bottle should be tightly sealed to prevent oxidation and evaporation of the oil. Store the oil in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources, as excessive heat can alter its chemical composition. A cupboard in your bedroom or living area, away from the kitchen and bathroom where humidity and temperature fluctuations are more common, is ideal. Proper storage helps maintain the oil's longevity.

    So Great! Can't do without!

Published by Sepi N on 8th Feb 2023

I've never been a fan of the smell of rosemary and the oils isn't any different but this is a miracle oil for just about everything. The quality of this from N-Essentials is great too. I use it all over from my head to my feet and a little goes a long way. I get itchy patches on my scalp and body and this along with a few other oils has worked a treat. Safe enough to use neat or mx with other EO and carrier oils. Very happy.

Published by Muhammad Abdullah on 18th May 2020

I've ordered this Oil, 100 ml bottle; initially i was bit hesitant with the quality (yes, i've read the review posted on this site) however after using this oil, i found very strong and no doubt about the quality. We are mostly using on hair (we have little kids 5.5 yrs and 1.5 yrs) and oil really works for all of us. Since started using this oil (with other carrier oil) we found dramatic action on hair. We Highly recommend this oil from N-essentials both quality and money wise. Looking forward to purchase from them again
